OHCA Notifies SoonerCare Members About New Federal Work Requirements
Summary
The Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) has begun notifying SoonerCare (Medicaid) members of new federal work requirements taking effect January 1, 2027. Adults ages 19 to 64 who are not otherwise exempt must complete 80 hours per month of qualifying activity, including employment, community service, or educational programs, or demonstrate a minimum monthly income. OHCA is using existing data to assess eligibility and will issue additional notices requiring documentation where needed. Providers and employers are directed to use OHCA's stakeholder toolkit to assist with outreach.
What this may mean
Beginning January 1, 2027, SoonerCare members ages 19 to 64 who fail to meet the 80-hour monthly work requirement and do not qualify for an exemption face loss of Medicaid coverage. Providers serving SoonerCare populations face potential patient panel disruption as members who cannot document compliance lose coverage. The requirement is grounded in new federal law, making Oklahoma's implementation a state Medicaid policy action with direct eligibility consequences.
