MaineCare Telehealth Services Provider Licensure Requirements

Score 78PRIMARYregulatoryState MedicaidME

What the document says

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services, Office of MaineCare Services, issued a provider bulletin on November 2, 2026, reminding providers that all telehealth services delivered to MaineCare members must comply with MaineCare Benefits Manual (MBM) Chapter I, Section 4: Telehealth Services. That section requires providers to be "appropriately licensed, accredited, certified, and/or registered in the state where the member is located during the provision of the telehealth service." The bulletin specifies that providers delivering services to MaineCare members who are physically located in Maine at the time of service must hold either appropriate Maine credentials or licensure recognized through Interstate Licensure Compacts recognized by the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation (DPFR) or another appropriate organization. This requirement applies to both in-person and telehealth service delivery. Pursuant to MBM Chapter I, Section 1.18, failure to comply with the licensure requirements can result in denial of claims or recoupment of payment. Services delivered without proper state licensure are not eligible for reimbursement under MaineCare.

What this may mean

Applies to all providers enrolled in MaineCare who deliver telehealth services to members located in Maine. Puts claims reimbursement and previously collected payments at issue for any provider lacking Maine licensure or a recognized Interstate Compact credential at the time of service delivery. Claim denial and recoupment authority is grounded in MBM Ch. I, Section 1.18.
