Summary

West Virginia's Department of Human Services is advising Medicaid members enrolled in the Adult Expansion Group to prepare for a community engagement (work) requirement taking effect January 1, 2027. Adults ages 19-64 in that eligibility category will be required to complete 80 hours per month of qualifying activities, including employment and participation in work programs, to retain coverage. The state agency is proactively communicating steps members should take before the deadline.

What this may mean

Beginning January 1, 2027, West Virginia Medicaid Adult Expansion enrollees aged 19-64 who fail to meet the 80-hour monthly activity requirement face loss of Medicaid coverage. Managed care plans and BH/SUD providers serving this population will see coverage disruptions and potential enrollment reductions if beneficiaries do not comply. Providers that rely heavily on Medicaid-expansion reimbursement for behavioral health or SUD services are directly exposed to volume changes.
